History of ISSPR

The Summer School on Pattern Recognition was organised for the first time at the University of Exeter, UK in 2003. There has been a growing demand for advanced training in pattern recognition from academic and industrial sectors. British Computer Society Specialist Group on Pattern Analysis and Robotics responded to this need and organised the first summer school. The driving force behind this concept was to set-up a residential school where students and teachers could converge for a focussed learning experience. The main aim was to bring together the leading experts in the various fields within pattern recognition to deliver tutorial style lectures. The speakers at the previous summer school are internationally well known, have written books and seminal articles, and are represented on leading journal boards. The first summer school was attended by 65 participants and was a huge success. It was generally felt by all attending that such a learning platform should be available annually. The second summer school was thereafter organised at Plymouth, UK in 2004. The summer school at this time attracted 86 participants and more than 20 eminent speakers. The venue was the then new 35 million pound Portland Square building at Plymouth University. The feedback from the participants was extremely positive. The next summer school was organised again at Plymouth in 2005 with nearly 100 participants attending from over 21 countries, and in 2006 with 70 participants. The last summer school, fifth in the series, was organised in 2007 with more than 95 participants. Last year's summer school in 2010 attracted more than 75 delegates. The summer school participants come from a wide ranging background and included PhD students, university research and academic staff, delegates from companies, and staff from government research and military organisations (e.g. DARPA, USA, GCHQ, UK, DSO, Singapore, etc.). The next Summer School will be organised between 4 and 9 September 2011 at Plymouth, UK. Please browse through this website for full details.
